Art Nouveau Bandstand

This six-metre diameter Art Nouveau Bandstand was designed by Peter Weldon for Cubley Hall Hotel in Penistone, Barnsley.  Proprietor John Wigfield commissioned the bandstand as part of the hotel's plans to apply for a wedding licence for civil services to be held on site in the garden.

In order for couples to be legally married out of doors, the bandstand had to have a fixed roof. Peter designed a striking and unusual Art Nouveau bandstand as a one-off design specifically for Cubley Hall.

Organic leafy pattern work curls around the railings, and a vine motif forms a distinctive arch between each cast iron column. The entrance is gated to restrict access at the top of stone stairs.

The structure has a number of distinctive features. The rainwater guttering directs water down through hollow columns and through the stone plinth below.

Electric cable also travels through the front columns to provide lighting at centre and internally around the perimeter of the roof. Power sockets have also been discreetly located around the structure. The bandstand has a curled strap ceiling and large ball bearing weathervane.
